Q. Are there several public holidays celebrated in Greece ?

A.=We could say that Greek people do celebrate several public holidays in a year.

Q. What do you mean by several public holidays?

A.= There is about one important celebration every month. This do not include

Family or personal holidays of course.

Q. Are they national or religious public holidays?

A = It can be a religious public holiday or it can be a national public holiday.

A.= Certainly!!! January the 1 st is celebrated with fast and joy. Families do get together

To eat a meal and they share presents. People sometimes go from one house to another.

People sometimes dance traditional dances. They also play cards. In the morning, children may find some presents left at night by Santa Claus or also by Saint Nicholas.

The presents are found under the Christmas tree or beside the fire place.

A.= Ash Monday is 40 days before Easter. It is the beginning of LENT. On that day, people eat fasting food. They also fly kites. The celebration is called KOULOUMA.

A. Independence Day is an important national day in Greece . Greeks celebrate the year 1821 March 25 th which is the declaration of independence from the Turkish occupation.

Food, a soup called MAYERITSA. They brake the colored eggs, Easter eggs.

A.= Easter Day is called PASKA. On that day, Greeks traditionally eat lamb, spit-roasted on charcoal. It is a day of big festivities: dancing, singing and drinking all day.

A. It is another important national holiday. Greece celebrates the rejection of the Italian ultimatum in 1940. Greece had refused to submit to the order to surrender. This a day for several parades. Schools and their students are part of the parades. All is closed except restaurants and tourist resources.
